Tanzanian Payments Landscape
Tanzania’s payments ecosystem has experienced substantial growth over the past decade, largely driven by the expansion of mobile financial services. By the end of 2024, the country had registered approximately 63.2 million active mobile money wallets. This growth reflects strong consumer demand for digital financial solutions, particularly in rural and underserved areas, where mobile money provides critical access to financial services.
Challenges in the Payment Ecosystem
Despite this progress, the Tanzanian payments landscape continues to face several structural challenges. The market remains fragmented, with a high reliance on cash for everyday transactions. Interoperability between payment providers has been limited, making it difficult for users on different networks to transact seamlessly.
Additionally, high transaction costs and limited access to infrastructure in remote regions hinder broader financial inclusion and reduce the efficiency of the digital payment ecosystem.
TIPS Objectives
The Tanzania Instant Payment System (TIPS) was established to address these challenges by providing a shared, real-time digital infrastructure for low-value transactions. Its overarching goal is to build an inclusive, interconnected, robust, and real-time payment system that ensures interoperability across financial service providers (FSPs).
